Events & Signings

Bird in Hand is delighted to host the relaunch of Marianna Busching’s trilogy of medical mysteries: False Awakening, False Medusa, and False Panacea! This event is the culmination of her collaboration with photographer and videographer Buddy Terry (who also happens to be your frequent barista at Bird in Hand).

A retired opera singer, Busching reveals in this trilogy an ability to investigate, with great focus and energy, questions of medicine through fiction: questions of illness that elude diagnosis, and questions of medical ethics and trust in medical professionals.

We hope you will join us to be a part of this one-of-a-kind celebration and conversation.

Book 1

False awakenings

Emily Branford's perfect life as the wife of a prominent surgeon is suddenly changed when a terrible dream awakens her to an even more terrible reality: something so dreadful is happening to her body that not even the best and finest scientists and doctors can diagnose the cause of the symptoms.

A naturally shy, quiet woman Emily gathers the strength to try and find the cause of something that may be killing her.  Could someone deliberately be doing this to her?  And if so, who is responsible? And Why?

The answer, if it can be found, will give you a chilling glimpse into the future.

False PANACEA

As a snowstorm begins, Dr. Roger Branford picks up an old woman from the street and takes her to St. John's Hospital. Once in the emergency room, she slips out of sight amid the crowd of incoming patients. Suddenly patients at the hospital begin to experience mysterious cures literally overnight. This phenomenon ends up on the news, and sick or injured people begin flocking to St. John's. The doctors are baffled and are even more stunned when, several days later, the cures suddenly begin to reverse.

Can these unexplainable events continue? Both doctors and police are shocked to finally find the truth and the horror that lies behind it.

Images for Better Singing

This book is intended to be an extra tool for singers and teachers of voice. The living instrument that produces the sound is totally out of sight and cannot be heard accurately by the very singer who is performing the song. The ideas and instructions presented here are not meant to replace other methods of teaching voice but are intended, instead, to be an added help.

Most people respond readily to graphic images. This book seeks to employ graphic images to aid in learning a difficult art with a difficult instrument. Long before this book was written, the pictures and ideas contained here were already "tested" on hundreds of my own students with great success. My students are the reason this book has finally been written...in the hopes that these ideas may help other singers and teachers.

"This book is truly amazing! I suffered a vocal injury in 2014 that made it painful to sing and caused my voice to seize up in pieces with a high tessitura. After doing the "hum and chew" exercises in the back of the book, I no longer experience pain and have regained my upper register. I'm so relieved to be pain free and be able to sing freely again.

Additionally, the images have given me confidence in other aspects of vocal performance. I read this book with great interest and enjoyment. It truly exceeded my expectations!"

Poems!

FROM EARTH'S FLOOR

These short poems are easy to read and invite contemplation with their often-unique perspective of God as the personal Creator and Savior. Although there is both joy and pain contained and expressed in these poems, there are touches of humor that may make readers smile. The “Ending” poems lead to a truly glorious “End.”

"Ms. Busching's collection is a luminous affirmation of belief with larger than any denomination confronting the hard facts of the human condition. Each poem is like a butterfly . . . present exquisitely and delicately against all natural odds . . . testifying to something more, something beyond articulation, sustaining hope against despair."

--Brian Anderson, Physicist, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory

"I found these poems deeply moving, many with a hymn-like quality. They are at once deeply personal and speak to our shared fears and hopes. But most of all, they speak to the Great Love that is there, if we only open ourselves to it."

--Leeann Roc, MD, Pathologist

"What happens when an award-winning mezzo-soprano turns her talents to poetry? You are drawn into words, images, and inspirations that take the reader soaring through flights of song. Marianna Busching offers us 'luminous notes' on the 'life's wonder.' We just hope that it will be a while before she 'kneels and sings / that last, most glorious / Agnus Dei.'"

-Lucy Hogan, Professor Emerita, Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C.

"These poems are a gift."

- Rob Boulter, Dean, Cathedral of the Incarnation, Baltimore

"In From Earth's Floor, Marianna, a faith-filled singing poetess, traces the sacred pulse that hums within the ordinary. Each poem is a prayer--chanted with gratitude, wonder, and the courage to look God in the face. From Earth's Floor is not merely a collection--it is a pilgrimage of the soul, where faith wrestles, weeps, and ultimately, sings."

-Debra Asis, Episcopal Priest and Poet
